From Proto-Indo-European *ǵneh₃-. From Middle English selcouth, from Old English selcūþ (“unusual, unwonted, little known, unfamiliar, novel, rare”), from seld- (“rarely”) + cūþ (“known”); equivalent to seld + couth.
