Etymology

Borrowed from Yiddish שנאָרער or German Schnorrer.

schnorrer (plural: schnorrers)

  1. A beggar.
    • (2000) David Golinkin, Responsa in a Moment, volume 3, "Investigating the Charities To Which We Contribute", p. 51:
      “A schnorer knocks on my door, holds out a letter signed by an eminent rabbi and asks me to contribute to his yeshivah in Jerusalem.”
  2. A sponger; a person who takes advantage of the generosity of others.
