From Latin accubātiō (“a reclining at table”), from accubō (“to recline at table”), from ad- (“to, toward”) + cubō (“to lie down”).

The act or posture of reclining on a couch, especially in reference to the custom of the ancient Greeks and Romans of reclining while dining.
